A Journey from Player to Coach

My passion for tennis began on the court, competing competitively during my junior years. The thrill of competition and the joy of the sport ignited a desire to share that passion with others. This led me to pursue the rewarding path of becoming an LTA Level 3 Tennis Coach.

Earning this qualification is a significant milestone, but it’s just the beginning. Personal development is a cornerstone of my coaching philosophy. I believe the more I refine my skills and knowledge, the greater impact I can make on my players’ journeys.

Multi-Sports Coordinator for Wrexham Council’s Dragon Sports program

For three years, I had the pleasure of serving as a Multi-Sports Coordinator for Wrexham Council’s Dragon Sports program. This initiative aims to introduce children aged 6-12 to a variety of sports and activities, fostering a love for physical activity and healthy lifestyles. In this role, I played a key part in:

  • Coordinating Expert Coaches: I recruited and scheduled qualified coaches with diverse specializations, ensuring a well-rounded program for participants.
  • Delivering Engaging Sessions: The program offered sessions at various venues across Wrexham, making sports accessible to a wider audience.
  • Building a Fun and Inclusive Environment: By collaborating with coaches, I helped create a positive and encouraging atmosphere where children could explore different sports, develop new skills, and build confidence.
  • This experience, alongside my tennis coaching, allowed me to make a significant contribution to promoting youth participation in sports within the Wrexham community.

Making a Difference Through Tennis: Coaching for Inclusion

Since 2006, I’ve found immense satisfaction in coaching tennis to individuals with physical and learning disabilities. Witnessing their dedication and growth on the court has been a continuous source of motivation.

The program fosters an inclusive environment where players with various abilities can develop their skills, coordination, and confidence. It’s incredibly rewarding to see their progress, highlighted by some participants going on to represent their country at the Special Olympics.

This experience has been a testament to the power of sport to create a level playing field and unlock potential, regardless of limitations. I’m committed to continuing this journey of positive impact through the world of tennis.

Mastering the Craft: Becoming a certified Master Racket Technician

They say knowledge is power, and on the tennis court, that power extends beyond your swing. As a certified Master Racket Technician, I possess the expertise to unlock the true potential of your game through the art of restringing.

Here’s why understanding stringing is a game-changer:

  • Precision Performance: Fresh strings offer optimal control and responsiveness, maximizing your power and accuracy. A Master Technician can tailor the string type, tension, and pattern to perfectly match your playing style and desired feel.
  • Preventing Injuries: Worn-out strings can lead to vibration and discomfort. Regular restringing maintains a consistent feel, minimizing the risk of arm fatigue and potential injuries.
  • Extending Racket Life: Proper stringing protects your frame, preventing premature wear and tear. A Master Technician can also identify potential frame issues and advise on maintenance for a longer racket lifespan.

By understanding the intricate world of strings, I can ensure your weapon is always perfectly tuned for victory. Let’s take your game to the next level, together.

My next adventure? Not the tennis court, but the boxing ring for my first amateur boxing match!

You might be surprised, but stepping into the squared circle for my first amateur boxing match is actually a way to become a better tennis coach. Here’s why:

  • Mental Fortitude under Pressure: Both tennis and boxing demand laser focus and nerves of steel. Facing an opponent in the ring will push my mental game to new heights, translating into calmer, more collected coaching for my players during crucial matches.
  • Understanding Footwork and Movement: Boxing is a dance of footwork and agility. Mastering these skills will enhance my ability to analyze and refine my players’ movements, making them more efficient and powerful on the court.
  • Building Resilience: Pushing myself in the ring teaches me resilience. Those lessons will translate into helping my players bounce back from setbacks and channel their competitive spirit into focused improvement.

So, while you won’t see me trading my racquet for gloves full-time, this boxing experience is about becoming a more well-rounded coach, ready to empower my players to reach their full potential.

Pushing Limits for a Cause: Skateboarding Wales for Nightingale House

I recently embarked on the epic challenge of skateboarding the entire length of Wales, all in support of Nightingale House and the memory of Wayne and James. These two incredible individuals, who received care from the hospice, inspired me to push my physical and mental limits for a cause close to my heart.

The Unskateables, as we called ourselves, may not have been seasoned skaters, but our dedication to Wayne and James fueled our journey. It wasn’t easy, but conquering this challenge wasn’t just about raising money and awareness for Nightingale House. It was about demonstrating the power of resilience and the importance of pushing ourselves beyond perceived limitations.

This adventure is a testament to the human spirit’s ability to achieve the seemingly impossible. It’s a message for everyone to find their own way to rise to challenges, big or small. Whether it’s conquering a personal fitness goal or supporting a cause you believe in, let’s all strive to be a bit more “unskateable” and reach for the finish line!

Movement in flow, power in breath: building resilience from the inside out
Rope Flow

To enhance my training philosophy with a more holistic and integrated approach, I pursued qualification as a Rope Flow instructor in 2024.
Rope Flow is a unique discipline—imagine the flowing movements of Tai Chi, but incorporating a rope. It offers a powerful, low-impact training modality that specifically targets and challenges:

  • Coordination and Fluidity
  • Movement and Mobility
  • Athletic Performance

It’s a passion of mine because it delivers significant athletic development without stress on the body, fostering a high degree of natural, seamless movement.

Breath Work

My commitment in 2024 is to further my education by becoming proficient in breathwork. I’m very passionate about learning how to use the breath to actively manage the nervous system—from activating the sympathetic (stimulating) state to promoting the parasympathetic (calming) state.
These techniques are incredibly important for helping both myself and my clients manage the pressures of daily life and enhance athletic performance, ultimately building a healthier and more resilient physiological system.
