Get Moving! Why Movement Matters for a Healthy You

As a personal trainer, I see first hand the incredible impact that movement has on people’s lives. It’s not just about sculpted physiques (although that can be a perk!), it’s about building a strong foundation for overall health and wellbeing.

Here in the UK, our busy lives often involve a lot of sitting – at desks, in cars, on the couch. While that cup of tea and a catch-up with a programme might seem relaxing, prolonged inactivity can have serious consequences.

So, why is movement so important? Let’s explore some key benefits:

  • Physical Health: Regular movement strengthens your heart, improves circulation, and helps manage weight. It also builds strong bones and muscles, reducing your risk of injuries and chronic diseases like type 2 diabetes and heart disease.
  • Mental Wellbeing: Exercise is a fantastic mood booster. Physical activity releases endorphins, those feel-good chemicals that combat stress and anxiety. It can also improve sleep quality, leaving you feeling energised and ready to tackle the day.
  • Stronger Body, Sharper Mind: Movement isn’t just about physical benefits. Studies show that regular exercise can improve cognitive function, memory, and focus. It can even help reduce the risk of dementia as we age.

The good news is, you don’t need to become addicted to the gym to reap the rewards! Even small changes can make a big difference. Here are some tips to get you started:

  • Take the Stairs: Skip the lift and climb those steps whenever possible. It’s a simple way to add some extra movement into your day.
  • Get Active at Work: Schedule regular walking breaks or do some simple stretches at your desk to avoid stiffness and boost your energy levels.
  • Find Activities You Enjoy: From dancing to swimming, cycling to gardening, there are endless ways to move your body. Choose something you find fun, so you’ll be more likely to stick with it.

Remember, consistency is key. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity exercise per week. Even small bursts of activity throughout the day are beneficial.

So, put on your trainers, step away from the screen, and get moving! Your body and mind will thank you for it.
